country music singer Dolly Parton is no stranger to daring outfits covered in sequins and sequins for her performances, but she chose a much more understated dress for her wedding on May 30, 1966 — and she had some regrets.

the ACM Award host, 75, married her partner Carl Dean when she was just 20 in a very intimate ceremony in Ringgold, Georgia, with only her mother, the preacher and his wife as witnesses. Dolly said “yes” in a simple sleeveless white dress with a fitted bodice and an A-line skirt that fell to her knees.

She accessorized with white pumps, matching gloves and a short veil attached to her curly blonde bob. Meanwhile, Carl looked dapper in a black suit and white shirt as he smiled for a photo.
The couple met at the ages of 18 and 21 outside their local laundromat on the first day the singer moved to Nashville in 1964. They married two years later and went on to renew their vows home on their 50th wedding anniversary.

Dolly opted for a short white wedding dress when she ran away
“We’re getting married again!” Dolly said to People in 2016. And she revealed that her second outfit would make up for her first low-key bridal look!
“I’ll have a nice wedding dress, because I didn’t have a big, long wedding dress when we got married, and we have a suit for him, so we’ll get dressed and take a bunch of pictures,” the islands in the stream hitmaker continued.

Two years later, she says People it wasn’t just her dress that she would have changed for her first wedding. “I never really felt like I had the wedding we really wanted,” she said, referring to the couple being forced to elope because she the label preferred that she remain single.
“We had already sent out invitations and I was like, ‘I’m not waiting!’ We went the same weekend to Ringgold, Georgia, to a little church. I had a little white dress and little flowers, and my mom went with me,” Dolly explained.

Speaking about the secret to their long-standing relationship, the Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings star continued, “I always say ‘Stay away!’ and there’s a lot of truth in that. I travel a lot, but we really appreciate each other when we’re together and the little things we do.
