Two gold medalists publicly announce their engagement
Two gold medalists who publicly announced their marriage proposal at the just-concluded 26th Nigeria University Games (NUGA) at the University of Lagos, have been honoured.
A student of Ahmadu Bello Zaria University, Sunday Ambule, had proposed to his love, Sa’adatu Hashime, from the same university on Wednesday during the games.
UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe made this known in his closing speech on Saturday when he brought the duo onto the stage to the admiration of the audience.
Speaking at the event, Prof Ogundipe said: “The icing on the cake was the athletes who pitched to each other, the man won the gold, the woman too.
“This competition will always be fresh in the minds of the two future couples and I will be happy to be the father of the day whenever they are ready to marry.
“It’s the first time we’ve experienced something like this, so I praise their courage,” he said.
For Ambule, a social science student at ABU, he proposed to his love as it was a perfect time as they were both participating in the tournament.
“I chose the tournament because I met her through sport, she is an athlete like me. She is adorable and understands me perfectly. She encouraged me a lot,” he said.
The lady of the moment, Hashime, from the same department as Ambule, who could not contain her joy, said it was “one of my best moments. I was shocked when he proposed to me and when we were called on stage. We feel so honoured.
The University of Port Harcourt won the 26th NUGA Games with host UNILAG coming second and Nile University, Abuja winning the third position.
